But since then, I've read and witnessed a few things that suggest to me that most moto helmets are probably too stiff for MTB use -- if not motocross and highway use.

The downside of this is that some of the smaller manufactures and Aus being helmet guys much smaller market than elsewhere cannot justify providing these helmets to Aus Standards out of their own pocket on a yearly basis and for every model, so they do not get sold in Australia as they have not passed AS Certification.

I think a lot of people fail to realize that helmets albeit expensive are supposed to protect you first and foremost.
